Quantum of Ka'ena

note: (I wrote this when the Bond movie came out, hence the title)

A virgin drive to the end of the Waianae Coast –Ka'ena Point- amounted to a desolate beach with a reefy shore and choppy waves breaking consistently.

In the distance, the unmistakable red shorts of a lifeguard could be seen jogging our way; perhaps the only source of reliable information about an entry point. He declared the spot to be over fished; which I took as a subliminal challenge.

Soon I was in the clear water flowing with the waves and soaking in the innate fear that came with the new territory. Convict tangs all around, but my eyes were set for something new. Venturing out was an experience and a tumble in the waves led me face to face with 5 large squid, who knew what I wanted. The tension in my left hand from engaging the spear was evident, and I could not believe the calmness I perceived from the prey. This is too easy I thought and then their leader's tentacles bloomed. Self doubt over came me; Will he spray me with ink? Is he poisonous? And the debilitating question for a hunter, 'what if I miss?' I turned and swam away, only to regret it later.

A foggy mask and a suspicious piece of discarded bait prompted me out of the ocean. Lesson learned: there is never a next time, there is only now. So I practiced my parkore.

And I spear the easiest catch, trash.

Shangri-La Expedition

A tip from a co-worker led us to a "secret" beach past Diamond Head.... This time I brought an accomplice who was armed with his under-water camera. Google Earth did not have clear images of the reef, but some info. from a local -who's door literally opened from an obsidian wall facing the beach- led us to a spot past the wave break. No lunch was caught, but my method is improving and my ability to spot edible fish is clear. No more going after chum reef fish, I want the steaks! A few more practice dives with my rusty spear and I'm upgrading to a longer, leaner, one.
